Character Background and Description One day, as per usual, a new goblin was found in the tunnels. This goblin's skin was pale instead of fancy, its ears were round instead of pointed. It even had golden hair! This was clearly the ugliest goblin any goblin had seen. It almost looked like a particularly small human, but everyone knew that the only things that randomly appear in the goblin tunnels were young goblins, bats, or rats. This thing could talk and walk on two legs and couldn't fly, so clearly it wasn't a bat or a rat. That made it a very, very ugly goblin. The ugly Goblin said his name was Barty, as was his right, and the goblins who found him dubbed him 'Uggob' because he was the ugliest goblin any of them had seen.
As Barty grew up, the other goblins realized Barty was weird. Barty actually tested his runic enchantments before using them live. He had to learn how to draw runes even though he was a goblin and knew such things automatically. When Barty found something that worked, he didn't stop working on it until it didn't have a chance of blowing off one of his arms. Barty understood how runes worked together somehow- none of the other goblins were sure how that went and his attempts at explanations were met with blank stares.
Eventually, other goblins realized that the things Barty made didn't explode randomly or create bad juju fields. Barty's things worked weird- they worked exactly as they were supposed to, without any of the fun side effects. Barty still had all his parts attached when he turned 20! By that point, due to his prodigious ability to evade injury, the Goblins decided that Barty would be the greatest of elders, even if he was a bit weird. And tall. And rather ugly.
